X-Ray Diffraction/Crystallography

X-ray diffraction is one of the most demanding x-ray imaging applications. The diffraction patterns produced by beaming x-rays through various crystals help scientists deduce the exact structure of molecules. This has made X-ray diffraction a crucial tool for pharmaceutical and biotech researchers who use the information from x-ray imaging in the development of new drugs, proteins, or other bioproducts (and in their patent filings).

Diffracted x-rays activate patterns of "spots" on a phospor screen. These spots need to be imaged to a very high level of precision and accuracy to be useful. If the images are not clear, molecules' signature spot patterns will be very difficult to identify. Success requires outstanding imager performance, including sensor cooling, low read noise, good spatial resolution/cosmetic quality, and efficient light gathering with a fiber/phosphor screen--all core competencies of DALSA Life Sciences.
